The Regional Population Executive Board (RPEB)-Sponsored Fun Run dubbed as “Takbo Laban sa Teenage Pregnancy” held last 23 November 2015, jumped start the 2015 Population and Development (PopDev) Week celebration in the region. It aims to create awareness of the need to address teenage pregnancy; and to generate the needed funds to undertake adolescent health and youth development (AHYD) interventions geared towards the prevention of early sexual involvement and the prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV/AIDS among the youth including adolescents in Region 2. Tarps and t-shirts bearing messages against teenage pregnancy complemented the information dissemination aspect of the activity.
451 runners coming from Tuguegarao City and nearby municipalities, representing all ages as young as six (6) years old and as old as 72 years old, joined the three-kilometer and five-kilometer run generating a total amount of Php 134,700.00 from the registration. Pledges from stakeholders including local government officials and private entities amounted to Php 118,500.00. The amount will be utilized to fund AHYD activities such as “Breaking the Barrier” session; U4U Teen Trail Initiative; and Kalalakihang Tapat sa Responsibilidad at Obligasyon sa Pamilya (KATROPA).
Dancers from the Department of Health Region 2 (DOH R02) and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Lallo, Cagayan provided the zumba exercises during the event at the Cagayan State University (CSU) Red Eagle Gymnasium, Carig, Tuguegarao City. Cash prizes were awarded to the first three (3) fastest male and female runners as well as the youngest and oldest runners totaling Php 33,000.00.
27 July 2015 marks the 1st birthday of the symbolic 100 Millionth babies nationwide who became part of a historical event in the country wherein based on the 2010 population projection by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), the 100 millionth Filipino (100Mth Pinoy) will be born on 27 July 2014 around 12:06 am or seconds/minutes later.
Here in Region 2, there are six (6) symbolic 100Mth babies that were born around that time based on the official monitoring done by the Commission on Population in collaboration with other concerned agencies, health workers and Provincial/City/Municipal Population Officers (P/C/MPOs). The symbolic babies are the following: (1) Kendra Dominique Cobaria of Kayuganan, Uyugan, Batanes; (2) Mierre Zyrille Joy C. Tuliao of Camasi, Peñablanca, Cagayan; (3) JC de Mesa Zipagan of Catabayungan, Cabagan, Isabela; (4) Jharley Maligsa Ang of Tuao North, Bagabag, Nueva Vizcaya; (5) Aliyah Pajota Racpan of Saguday, Quirino; and (6) Darren Macatbag Carino of Tagaran, City of Cauayan. These babies symbolize a new hope for a better quality of life for their generation and for future generations to come.
PopCom RO2 Celebrates the 2015 World Population Day (WPD) and Recognizes the LGU Regional Winners of the 2014 Search for the Rafael M. Salas Population and Development Award (RMSPDA)
Last 10 July 2015, the Commission on Population Region 2 (Popcom RO2) celebrated the 2015 World Population Day (WPD) with the theme “Dignity and Protection of Vulnerable Populations in Emergencies” at Isabela Zen Hotel, Santiago City. Two (2) papers were presented during the Forum, namely: (1) Special Needs of Persons with Disability (PWDs) in Emergencies by Preseident Amalia Decena of the Regional Federation of PWDs, and (2) Different Hazards in Region 2 by Geosciences Division Chief Felicitas V. Piligan of Region 2 Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB).
The Forum was followed by the awarding ceremony for the Local Government Unit (LGU) Regional Winners for the Search for the 2014 Rafael M. Salas Population and Development Award (RMSPDA). The regional awardees are the following: For the City Category: 1st Place-Santiago City, 2nd Place-Tuguegarao City, and 3rd Place-Cauayan City; For the Municipality Category: 1st Place-Saguday, Quirino; 2nd Place-Mahatao, Batanes and 3rd Place-Aglipay, Quirino.
