Record Breaking Attendance During the 2016 Regional Population Congress and LePOWPhil General Assembly
Attendance to this year’s Region 2 Regional Population Congress (RPC) and League of Population Officers and Workers of the Philippines (LePOWPhil) General Assembly surpassed the attendance of the two previous staging of the same event in 2014 and 2015. This year, 303 participants attended the annual event compared to 156 in 2014 and 213 in 2015. This can be attributed to the hard working officers of the League as well as the good working relationship amongst the officers and its members, and the Commission on Population Regional Office No. 2 (PopCom RO2) staff.
Most of the participants came from the delegation of Isabela (75 pax); Cagayan (50 pax); Nueva Vizcaya (45 pax); City of Ilagan (44 pax); and Quirino (40 pax).
The Congress and Assembly is an annual gathering of population officers and workers of the region to get together and meet new friends through friendly games and contests such as the Search for Mr. and Ms. Population Congress as well as to share the findings of relevant population studies and to showcase the best practices of local government units (LGUs) in the region.
This year’s Congress was held at Venus Park View Hotel in Baguio City last 16-18 March 2016.

Upon the invitation of PopCom R2, the Grade 10 journalism students of DMMNHS went on air to talk about the issue of teenage pregnancy during the radio program of the National Nutrition Council Region 2 (NNC R2) entitled “Batang Radyo sa Nutrisyon” last 20 March 2016, 12:30-1:00 pm at the DWPE Radyo ng Bayan. The group was headed by their SPJ Adviser, Mr. Franklin Castillejo and the members were the following: (1) Vanessa Mae Bergonia; (2) Jamil Bob Tejada; (3) Kristel Kate Antonio; and (4) Zaira Bue. Dr. Herita O. Macarrubo, Planning Officer IV of PopCom R2 was their resource person during the program. Their Principal is Ms. Emelita P. Collado.
The students informed their listeners that Region 2 is number 2 all over the country in terms of the incidence of teenage pregnancy at 18.1 percent based on the 2013 Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality Study (YAFSS) as well as the consequences of teenage pregnancy.
The reason why the students were invited to prepare a radio skit is because PopCom R2 believed that young boys and girls should be given the opportunity to share their insights about the challenges that they are facing today and let their voices be heard in resolving these problems.
The “Batang Radyo sa Nutrisyon” is a regular radio program of NNC R2 headed by Ms. Rhodora G. Maestre, the Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator, at DWPE every Sunday from 12:30- 1:00 pm.

The campaign will be expanded to display these stickers in strategic places near schools and public facilities in time for the opening of classes in June 2016.
The following are the AHYD messages that were placed in the stickers: (1) Kabataan: Toga Muna Bago Trahe de Boda; (2) Kabataan: Ang pag-aaral ay para sa hinaharap. Huwag ipagpalit sa sandaling sarap; (3) Kabataan: Hindi bahay-bahayan ang kasal. Be happily married someday but not today; (4) Kabataan: Ang tunay na kaibigan, hindi ka ipapahamak kahit kalian. Take it slow.
The team from Zonta and PopCom R2 went from one TODA parking station to another putting stickers inside public tricycles with the permission of the drivers. The team explained to these drivers the problem of teenage pregnancy in the city as well as the consequences of said problem. Along the way, passersby were also informed about the issue.
