The milestones achieved from the period 2014-2015 manifests the strong partnership among local government units (LGUs), regional line agencies, civil society organizations (CSOs) and the Commission on Population Regional Office II (PopCom RO2) in the implementation of the program components of the Philippine Population Management Program (PPMP), namely: (1) Responsible Parenthood and Family Planning (RPFP) Program; (2) Adolescent Health and Youth Development Program (AHYDP); (3) Population and Development (PopDev) Integration Program; and (4) Gender and Development (GAD) Program.
Specifically, there is an increasing number of couples of reproductive age (CRAs) reached through RPFP classes and mentored successfully to the nearest health facility for their modern FP method needs.
Likewise, during this period, gathering of data on teenage pregnancy at the health facility level was crucial in the provision of different AHYD interventions in areas where teenage pregnancy incidence is high. It can be noted that Region 2 is number 2 in the whole country with 18.1% incidence based on the 2013 Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality Study (YAFSS) 4 of the University of the Philippines Population institute (UPPI). These interventions, namely: (1) Teenage Pregnancy Symposium; (2) U4U Teen Trail Initiative; (3) Breaking the Barrier Session; (4) Kalalakihang Tapat sa Obligasyon at Responsibilidad at Obligasyon sa Pamilya (KATROPA) are conducted in high schools and Out-of-School Youth (OSY) gatherings particularly in the top 20 cities and municipalities with high number of teenage pregnancy cases.
It also showed more involvement of LGU partners in addressing population issues particularly teenage pregnancy by giving their full support in the implementation of AHYD activities together with PopCom RO2.
Our partner line agencies also contributed by conducting a fun-run in 2015 dubbed as “Takbo Laban sa Teenage Pregnancy” to raise awareness on the issue as well as to raise funds for the various AHYD activities. Our Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) have also been very supportive by providing moral support and in conducting their own AHYD activities as well as funding some of the PopCom RO2-prescribed AHYD activities particularly in high schools.
PopCom RO2 hopes that this strong partnership will continue to further address remaining population-related issues in the region for happy, healthy, and empowered Cagayan Valley families.
